The abacus is an ancient calculating tool that uses beads on rods to represent numbers. The Japanese Soroban abacus, which we teach, has 1 heaven bead and 4 earth beads per rod — allowing calculations up to billions. It forms the foundation of all mental arithmetic training at Soroban Abacus.

Abacus training makes children 5× faster in arithmetic while simultaneously activating both brain hemispheres. Regular practice strengthens concentration, visual memory, creativity, and self-confidence — skills that benefit every area of academic and personal life.

Mental Arithmetic (Anzan) is the ability to calculate entirely in the mind by visualizing the abacus. Students start this at Level 3. By Level 7–8, they master Flash Anzan — solving problems where numbers flash for milliseconds on a screen — a skill that leaves audiences in awe.

Using an abacus involves moving beads towards the centre bar to represent numbers. The upper deck beads each represent 5, while the lower deck beads each represent 1. Our structured 8-level curriculum teaches perfect finger technique and bead movements step-by-step from the basics.

The abacus dates back over 5,000 years — from ancient Mesopotamia to China, Rome, and Japan. The Japanese Soroban was refined in the 14th century and remains the gold standard for mental arithmetic training today. Japan introduced it into school curricula, proving its remarkable effectiveness.

In 1946, a Japanese Soroban operator defeated an electric calculator in a speed test — proving the abacus masters can outperform modern machines. Studies show that abacus-trained children score significantly higher in maths and science, with improved memory and problem-solving ability.

Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing by developing a child's ability to hear, identify, and use sounds (phonemes) in spoken language.
